I have 2 6v batteries series wired on my RV. Can I mount the shunt inside the battery box next to the negative terminal or does it need some additional protection?

The shunt for the Victron Energy BAM030712000 BMV 712 Smart Battery Monitor with Bluetooth has an exposed circuit board so it needs a dry location where it is protected from accidental mechanical damage. If you have a location that is not perfectly dry the Victron Energy SHU065150050 SmartShunt 500A/50mV (IP65 version) would be a better bet.
