If you have a battery with an external BMS you can arrange for the BMS to turn off the regulator. If you have a battery with an internal BMS there is no way for the BMS to stop charging other than turning off the battery. If this happens with the engine running the alternator will be toast, and possibly so will the other electronics on the boat. Adding the APM-12 alternator protection module will give some level of security in this case although it is not guaranteed. The only sure fire way to do this is either have a battery with an external BMS that can control the regulator, or take the alternator output to a conventional battery and use a DC DC Charger to charge the lithium.
