The purpose of the fuse is to protect the wire and so the fuse goes as close to the power source as possible. In this case the power source is the 24 volt battery. This is a separate function to an internal fuse which is just to protect the internal electronics. On the input side the expected current at 24 volts would be 35 amps and I suggest you fit at least a 50 amp fuse or circuit breaker near the battery. We want the fuse to be more than the expected current to prevent nuisance tripping. Then you have to use a wire size that at a minimum can carry the current that matches the rating of the fuse. You can consult the Ampacity Tables. The tables give you a minimum size but in DC circuits its normal to exceed the minimum because of voltage drop.
