In other words, from the very bottom/outside of the case where the wires enter, to the wire terminals inside the case -- is how long? (I have an existing installation that I am converting, and am trying to figure if I can use my existing wiring)

The box is shipped without any holes drilled in it, you get to do this yourself so you can situate them in the most convenient place. They supply you with cable glands to help make them water resistant. Obviously its best for waterproofing reasons if you make them in the bottom of the box. You also have to supply the input and output wires of course, and the limitation here is that if you make them too short you wont be able to leave the front face of the box open enough to make the connections. I think you want to leave at least 6" to have enough to work with.
