The ACR or automatic charge relay is a computer controlled ON-OFF switch. It turns on when the conditions are met, and turns off when they aren't. The two sides of the switch are connected to the two batteries in the system. When the switch is ON the two batteries are connected together, when it is OFF they aren't.
The conditions that cause it to operate are pre-programmed and not usually adjustable. The Blue Sea 7601 Mini Automatic Charge Relay is set to turn on and combine when one of the batteries is 13 volts or above. There are some safety features built in; it wont combine if one of the batteries is below 9.5 volts. This is because charging a flat battery requires manual oversight.
This particular ACR is also set to work in a 24 volt system and it automatically detects the system voltage and adjusts the parameters.
