The alternator itself is ignition protected. The regulator is totally sealed in epoxy. You do need to be careful however because the wire harness that joins the two contains a fuse that is not ignition protected. You will need to make some modification to eliminate the fuse which becomes tricky because you are eliminating the circuit protection.
