Yes you can have a battery switch in the system and still use this monitor. The monitor has to be on all the time however. The shunt is permanently wired to the negative terminal of the battery and all the negative connections to the battery must go through the shunt. Then the provided battery sense wire (with fuse) connects directly to the battery positive terminal. The monitoring system is then always on. The battery would go on the positive output wire from the battery and turning it off would not affect power to the monitor.
If you were to disconnect power to the meter it would reset itself and lose its place, which is why it has to stay on all the time. The power consumption is miniscule.
