The shunt comes with a power cable that goes to the battery positive terminal and is approx 4 feet long. You should try and keep the shunt close enough to use this cable without extending it. If you extend it further you get into a voltage drop issue between the shunt and the battery negative. This would generate false measurements because now you are not measuring the battery voltage, you are measuring some other voltage that will vary depending on how much current is flowing.
