Yes, using an incorrect size mounting bolt could lead to the alternator being improperly aligned when you tighten the belt. This misalignment can result in accelerated belt wear due to the alternator being out of alignment. The mounting bolt must be the same diameter as all the holes it passes through. Out of the box the alternator is expecting a 10 mm diameter mounting bolt (or 3/8") but some engines have an 8 mm (or 5/16") mounting bolt. Balmar provide bushings for this alternator to reduce the size of the mounting holes from 10 mm to 8 mm. They are included in the package.
