If you buy the alternator by itself it is sold as Balmar 60-120-K6 Alternator -12 Volt 120 Amp K6 Pulley and all you get is the alternator. If you buy it as a kit then it is sold as Balmar 60-YP-MC-120-K6 Alternator and regulator kit -12 Volt 120 Amp K6 Pulley and included is the MC-618-H regulator and two temp sensors. This is a more economical way to buy it. The alternator definitely needs an external regulator. It has an internal backup regulator which you can activate in an emergency but it is a single stage regulator not intended for everyday use.
