Choosing the Balmar MC-618 over the ARS-5 is a wiser decision as it offers several features that you may not currently need but may find useful in the future. This means that by choosing the Balmar MC-618, you are somewhat "future-proofing" your installation. Firstly the MC-618 gives you a higher field current output, this is essential to unleash the maximum potential of the XT series and larger alternators. This also gives it the ability to drive two alternators on the same engine. It also can interface to the Centerfielder which coordinates charging between two alternators on different engines. Next it offers you the ability to remotely sense the battery voltage and thus compensate for voltage drops between the alternator and battery. Next it offers you the ability to connect and program it using the Balmar SG210 and the Balmar app on your phone. Then it has a built in Lithium program, and finally it offers more programming options throughout the menu structure. So even if you dont need it now you might later and for a $64 upgrade it could be money well spent.
