Yes, this Victron 200ah battery requires an external BMS. This is crucial for managing the battery's performance, safety, and longevity. The external BMS helps ensure optimal operation and protects the battery from overcharging or being run flat. Victron have a number of BMS options and selecting one depends on the application.
There are also a couple of other ones I didn't mention.
- The Small BMS is the simplest and cheapest option for very simple systems
- The BMS CL 12-100 is often used in vans when charging the battery from the stock alternator
- The VE Bus BMS V2 is used in a number of more sophisticated installations
- The Lynx Smart BMS comes in two versions, 500 amps and 1000 amps and these are used for all large or sophisticated systems and for almost all marine applications and integrate into the Lynx DC Distribution System
