An ELCI (Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupter) is a safety device designed to detect ground faults and interrupt the electrical circuit to prevent electric shock and reduce the risk of electrical fires. It monitors the current flow and trips the circuit if it detects a leakage current that exceeds a predetermined threshold. New boats are required to be fitted with ELCI's to meet ABYC standards. The trip current setting for these is 30 mA. In the case of boats one of the principal reasons these are required is to prevent leakage current in the water. These electrical leaks lead to many drownings each year.
