If an alternator output is disconnected while the engine is running, the voltage will rise until something fails because there is nowhere for the power to go. This situation can cause significant damage, which the Balmar APM-24 helps prevent by grounding the alternator output. The Balmar APM-24 protects alternators from the damaging effects of battery switch disconnects by providing a direct short circuit across the output terminals of the alternator. The short circuit is intended to be for a microsecond but its function is to remove power from the system and stop the regulator from being able to generate any field current.
