Can the Victron Orion XS 12/12-50's output be directly connected to the starter battery and alternator?? Victron ORI121217040 Orion XS 12/12-50 non-isolated DC-DC charger

I'd like to use this to keep the starter battery correctly charged from the (much larger) house battery when sitting for extended periods. Can this charger be directly connected to the starter battery and alternator? If the house battery is disconnected from the input, does the output also need to be disconnected?
