The functionality of the two is the same but the Orion XS adds the VE Direct Port which allows it to connect to the Cerbo GX, and it includes a current sensor which then allows you to vary the output and dial it down if required. I don't really know how they engineered the increased efficiency but I remember hearing about them using an aluminum circuit board to help with heat dissipation. The increased efficiency is what allows the unit to be so much smaller. Because less heat is produced the mechanism to remove it can be so much smaller.
