The Blue Sea 285 series circuit breaker provides medium duty circuit protection and switching, making it suitable for safeguarding electrical circuits against overloads and short circuits in a wide range of applications. Medium duty protection balances durability and performance, making it ideal for many marine and automotive systems. There are two reasons why it is not considered heavy duty. The first is that the terminals are only 1/4" diameter whereas the heavier duty 187 series uses 5/16" terminals. The second is that this circuit breaker only has an AIC Rating of 3000 amps which is less than the ABYC requirement of 5000 amps @ 12 volts for use as a primary circuit breaker on larger battery banks. The equivalent 187 series breaker has a 5000 amp AIC Rating at 12 volts.
