A Battery Management System (BMS) is essential for protecting lithium batteries from overcharge, deep discharge, temperature extremes, and cell imbalance, ensuring safety and maximizing lifespan. All lithium batteries have some kind of BMS. Some batteries feature a built-in BMS for plug-and-play installation. While this makes for a simple installation it isnt necessarily an optimal arrangement Batteries like the Victron NG range use an external BMS. Having an external BMS allows more control over the battery bank and is especially important for marine applications where advance notice of shutdown is an ABYC requirement. Having an external BMS also permits larger battery banks, higher charge and discharge rates, and serial connection for higher voltages. Batteries with internal BMS's are suitable for simpler applications like golf carts but for performance battery banks an internal BMS is optimal.
