Installation is straightforward but requires basic tools (torque wrench, impact wrench) and about 1-2 hours. Disconnect the battery first. General steps (detailed in Balmar's PDS-48-YSP-3GM-A.pdf, applicable to all variants):
- Remove the engine belt cowling and swing the alternator to remove the old V-belt.
- Install the serpentine crank pulley over the existing one (apply anti-corrosion gel to metal surfaces; torque bolts to Yanmar specs).
- Replace the water pump pulley (test fit, apply threadlocker to bolts, torque per specs).
- Install the alternator pulley on your Balmar alternator (17mm shaft; torque nut to 70-80 ft-lbs; use spacer for 6/XT/9-Series).
- Route the new serpentine belt (crank → water pump → alternator), tension to 1/32" deflection per inch of span under 25 lbs pressure, and secure the alternator.
- Check alignment with a straight edge, reinstall cowling, and re-tension after initial runs. For Hitachi alternators, add Balmar part 48-AM-97. Consult the engine-specific data sheet for torque values.
