Voltage is an unreliable way to measure a battery's state of charge, especially for lithium (LiFePO4) batteries. A battery's voltage stays relatively flat for most of its discharge cycle before falling off a "cliff" when it's nearly empty. The BMV-712 uses a shunt to count every amp that goes in and out, a process called "coulomb counting." This gives you a true, accurate SoC percentage from 100% all the way down to 0%.
