Question: What is the difference between VE.Bus and VE.Can?
Answer: VE Bus and VE Can are two different communication protocols used by Victron, but both use the same RJ45 Cables.
- VE.Bus: Used primarily for high-power devices like MultiPlus and Quattro inverter/chargers. This is a proprietary language only used with Victron devices. The VE Bus cables do not use end terminators.
- VE.Can: Used for networking devices like the larger MPPT solar controllers, Lynx Shunts, and Lynx BMS units. It uses the same RJ45 cables as VE Bus but the protocol (Language being spoken) is different as is the network architecture. VE Can cables can daisy chain from one device to another and require an end terminator at each end of the network. The protocol is essentially the same as Can Bus and so can be used with products other than Victron.
The Key Point: Both protocols use the exact same RJ45 UTP cables for physical connection.
