Here are the most common misperceptions about the Victron MultiPlus, in short:
- “It’s just an inverter” No — it’s a powerful inverter + charger + automatic transfer switch in one box (and PowerAssist, PowerControl, etc.).
- “It needs shore power to work” False. It runs perfectly off-grid on batteries only.
- “Parallel and 3-phase is complicated/impossible” Very straightforward — up to 6 units parallel per phase, full 3-phase or split-phase configs supported out of the box.
- “It can’t handle big motor/surge loads” It can — 2× rated power for 3–5 seconds, often starts loads that cheaper inverters can’t.
- “You must use Victron lithium batteries” No — works great with any 12/24/48 V battery (lead-acid, AGM, gel, LiFePO4) as long its big enough and as long as you program it correctly.
- “The built-in transfer switch is slow” <20 ms switchover — fast enough for computers and most sensitive gear.
- “It draws a lot of power when idle” Search/AES modes drop idle consumption to ~2–8 W depending on model.
- “Programming it is hard” VE.Configure (PC) or VictronConnect (phone) make it easy; assistants handle 95 % of advanced stuff.
That’s pretty much it — most “problems” people report come from wrong settings rather than the unit itself. At PKYS we have a ton of Blog posts to help you update the firmware, program the unit, and get remote access,
