In a 24V or 48V system where 12V batteries are connected in series, individual batteries can drift apart in their state of charge. The Battery Balancer monitors the voltage of each battery. If it detects a difference (usually more than 100mV), it draws a small current from the higher-voltage battery to equalize them, preventing one battery from being overcharged while the other is undercharged
