PKYS views a high-powered alternator as the key to a successful DC system because there is no other way to produce a large amount of power reliably and quickly once a vessel or vehicle leaves the dock or shore power. The only time we can do away with a high output alternator is if the boat has a large amount of solar, which can happen with large catamarans, or if it is a high speed boat with a water generator.
