Absolutely. Lithium batteries are sensitive to over-charging and over-discharging. All lithium batteries need a Battery Management System (BMS) which is responsible for disabling loads and charging when the battery is outside its temperature limits or when it is full up or nearly empty. This is to prevent damage to the battery. Having a sophisticated battery means you have to have sophisticated equipment to take care of it. Some batteries (like the Victron Superpack and Superpack NG batteries) have an internal BMS but these batteries come with certain limitations, tend to be larger, have shorter lifespans, and cannot be intergrated into a sophisticated electrical system. Batteries with an external BMS like the Victron NG Batteries are more sophisticated, allow being connected in series, have higher charge and discharge rates, longer lives, and a higher energy density. They work much better when integrated into complicated systems with multiple charge sources and especially where there in an alternator involved.
