You must match the solenoid to the maximum current expected in the circuit Typically a 500A solenoid is used for main battery banks or large engine starters. A 120A ACR is often sufficient for smaller auxiliary charging circuits with a smaller alternator. Always ensure your wire size matches the amperage rating of the solenoid to prevent overheating. Also take note that to meet published ratings many solenoids require you to use heavy or doubled up cables. This is because the cables are how heat is removed from the solenoid and bigger cables can remove more heat.
