An ELCI is a safety device that protects the entire boat from electrical leakage. While a standard GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protects a single outlet and has a 5 mA trip current, an ELCI acts as a "whole-boat" protector and has a 30mA trip current. It detects small amounts of current "leaking" into the water—often due to faulty wiring or old appliances—which can lead to Electric Shock Drowning.
