Efficiency and scale. A 48V system allows you to handle much higher power loads with smaller, less expensive wiring. For example, a 10,000VA inverter on a 12V system would require impossibly thick cables, whereas on a 48V system, the current is much lower, reducing heat and improving overall system efficiency.
