V-Belts: The traditional "V" shape. Single V-belts (SV) are generally limited to 12 volt alternators under 100A. Double V-belts (DV) can handle more.
Serpentine: These are flat, multi-groove pulleys (like in a modern car). They provide much more surface area, allowing them to drive high-output alternators (100A to 250A+) with virtually no slippage or dust.
