Standard V-belts have limited power transfer capabilities. A single 1/2" wide V-Belt is capable of supporting a 100 amp 12 volt alternator or a 50 amp 24 volt alternator. If you try a bigger alternator without upgrading the pulley system you will get belt dust and squealing and a very short life for the belt. Upgrading to a multi-groove (serpentine) belt allows you to install much larger, high-output alternators (up to 200A or more) without the belt slipping, dusting, or wearing out prematurely. It also results in quieter operation and less vibration.
