"Small Case" refers to the physical frame size (often roughly 5 to 6 inches in diameter). They are designed to fit the standard mounting footprints found on most small-to-medium marine diesel engines (like Yanmar, Volvo, or Westerbeke). Large case alternators provide more power and have better cooling but in the standard space of these smaller diesels. Large case are found on the larger diesels such as Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel and similar big engines.
