Parentheses indicate a momentary position. A standard maintained switch (denoted as ON-OFF) clicks into place and stays there until you manually flip it back. A momentary switch (like (ON)-OFF) is spring-loaded; it only stays active for as long as you keep physical pressure on it (for instance, a boat horn button or trim tabs).
